Ahyan Won CalChess State Champion in Under 1600

Ahyan became CalChess State Champion in Under 1600 rating group in the Labor Day Weekend Tournament of 2018. He scored 5 out of 6 along with Mohammad S Khan. With the champions trophy he also got 966 dollars prize check and a 51 rating points increase to push him to the next rating group. You may find the full standings here.

My own performance in Under 2200 group was a disaster scoring 2 out of 6 and am pushed down 52 rating points and 1 group below. Ahyan is now 1 rating group behind to catch me. Also I ran for the CalChess Board Membership during this tournament. I lost by 2 votes less than the 4th board member who was elected but I see lots of responses from chess players and parents. I will try it again next year. Thanks to everyone who voted for me, supported me and encouraged me.

It's time for this year's CalChess State Open Championship. It's being organized by Berkeley Chess School during September 1-3 at Crowne Plaza Silicon Valley N- Union City, 32083 Alvarado-Niles Rd, Union City, CA 94587, USA. This year I will be running for the general election of CalChess Board of Directors which will be held in the 2nd day of the tournament in the same place. The board is comprised of 8 members each serving for 2 years. Every year 4 of the 8 positions are open for re-election. So this year's 4 positions will be contested by the following candidates.

But if you vote 5 or more candidates, your ballot will be declared invalid. I hope you will give me a chance to serve you as a board member by voting me as 1 of your 4 choices.

Let me tell you why. I have been playing chess since my childhood and am a USCF Candidate Master. I am also a chess parent and my son Ahyan Zaman is the current  G/30 National Champion in Under 1600 rating class. I have been involved in various local chess tournaments not only as a player but also as a TD and promoter occasionally. Chess runs in my family and I understand the dreams and pains of chess players as well as chess parents. I am also advisor of ACPB (Association of Chess Players of Bangladesh). Outside of chess, I have served as President of BABA (Bay Area Association of Bangladesh) and am advisor of several startups. 

I see a big potential for Chess In General in USA and Northern California in particular. With the upcoming Caruana - Carlsen World Championship fight this November, and outstanding performances of GM Sam Shankland from our area, we are in a fortunate time for chess. If elected, I will work on promoting CalChess as a brand and approach the corporate sponsors of different software companies in Sillicon Valley. Being a software engineer, I worked with Mechanics Chess Institute to arrange two inter-software-company team tournaments in San Francisco couple of years back. I will do my best to showcase CalChess as a viable option for the companies who usually have large marketing budget. For this to happen, we need to also step up on the social presence of CalChess which I will work on with CalChess board. In short, I offer -

• Improve CalChess Social Web Presence
• Write chess articles on behalf of CalChess
• Chess Event Coverage
• Promoting both Scholastic and Adult Chess

Vote for Me in CalChess Board of Directors Election

The election for CalChess Board of Directors will be held at 30th August 7 PM at Berkeley Chess School located at 1581 Le Roy Ave, Berkeley, California. You can find the announcement in CalChess website or in this link or simply read it below which I copied. 

If you are current member of CalChess and over 14 years of old, you are eligible for giving a vote. You have to make sure your membership didn't expire before August 30th 2014. You can check the membership list here. To give the vote you have to be physically present in that location that day.

If you are interested to run for the election yourself as one of the candidates, you will need to send an email to CalChess President Tom Langland. You should go through the updated CalChess ByLaws. And of course you have ask the voters to vote for you.

I have decided to run for the board this year. So I ask your vote. Now let me tell you what value I can add to the board. In fact when I emailed to apply for the position to Tom I offerred the below 6 items as how I can add value to the board.

CalChess 2014 Annual General Meeting Date Set

Greetings!

The CalChess Board of Directors has selected Saturday, August 30, 2014 as the date of the next CalChess Annual General Meeting. The meeting will start at 7:00 PM. The location is still being determined but will either be at the Berkeley Chess School located at 1581 Le Roy Ave, Berkeley, California, or the Santa Clara Convention Center located at 5001 Great America Parkway, Santa Clara, CA. This will hopefully be in conjunction with the annual CalChess Labor Day State Open Championship Tournament held in Santa Clara.

During this meeting the elections for the CalChess Board of Directors will take place. Candidates and voters must be members in good standing to be placed on the ballot or to vote. Candidates and voters should review the CalChess Bylaws for eligibility.
